INTRODUCTION
The EDL Foundation is a Section
21 Company registered in 1997 for the purposes
of social responsibility. It is a non-profit
organisation which relies on funding and grants
for its operation.
The EDL Foundation provides
funded education support (maths, science, English)
and workplace skills training for unemployed
learners in company supported learning centres,
community centres and schools. The EDL
Foundation has been granted the rights
to use the Edutrac blended e-learning product
to meet these initiatives. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
BACKGROUND
Research completed by Dr Gill
Crawford* centred on the issue of learning in
South Africa and how formal education (or the
lack of it) impacts on skill levels in the workplace,
employee performance, entrepreneurial capabilities
and economic empowerment in general.
The political and social legacy in South Africa
coupled with global technology developments
and the expectations of people confirmed Dr
Crawford’s findings. A new approach to
education and skills training using technology
was the way forward.
In focusing on the unemployed who needed opportunities
for economic empowerment the following challenges
emerged:
|
| • |
Meeting the need for individual
learners in schools (students or teachers)
to upgrade or enrich their knowledge base
preserving self esteem. |
| • |
Providing remediation
interventions for those whose formal
education did not meet new or expanded
standards. |
| • |
The development needs
of the unemployed to find employment
or start their own businesses. |
Part of the solution was found in Alexandra
Virginia, USA where Dr. Robert Taggart, the
Director of RTI Foundation, had developed a
unique, well structured and extensive technology-driven
multi-media learning system that was working
successfully for RTI needs in the USA. Based
on this technology model, researchers in the
newly formed EDUTRAC (Pty) LTD developed a proudly
South African System through which interactive
learning units could be accessed, relevant to
SAQA, SETA’s, NQF Levels, DOE and the South
African school curriculum.
The EDL Foundation was established in 1997 as
a Section 21 non-profit company based in the
Sanlam Centre in Randburg, Gauteng. In 2002
EDUTRAC (Pty) LTD granted the EDL Foundation
the rights to use the product EDUTRAC.
In 2011 The EDL Foundation signed a contract
to partner with ACE LEARNING SYSTEMS,
a Singapore Maths Company (ACE LEARNING School
Maths, English), to make their South African
customised material available for South African
schools.
In June 2001 the EDL Learning Centre registered
as an Examination Centre with the IEB for ABET
Level examinations which our learners prepare
for, resulting in an Umalusi SETA accreditation.
The EDL Foundation is a registered ETDP SETA
provider and DOE registration applicant.

Since inception the EDL Foundation
has developed a number of “partnerships”
with community centres in Pietermaritzburg,
Central Johannesburg, Elim (Northern Province),
Nelspruit, East London, and Centurion. Schools
are using the system with trained facilitators/teachers.
The Foundation offers Companies social investment
opportunities using Edutrac in communities
and in schools of employees’ children,
to serve the needs for skill development.
The Pfuxanani Youth Centre is in the Elim
District of the Northern Province, South Africa
services a large community of young rural
people in an area that offers little employment.
The EDL Foundation partnership with Johnson
& Johnson International is long standing.
The result of this long-term association is
a Youth Centre that is well maintained; active
projects that have been sustained over ten
years; a garden that is exceptional in the
area; vegetable growing to provide food necessary
for the HIV/AIDS Orphan Project and a history
of developing Management Staff dedicated to
the operational activities.
ABOUT THE PFUXANANI
YOUTH CENTRE AND
THE ELIM HLANGANANI CARE FOR THE AGED
CENTRE
The reality of the Elim District (Limpopo)
is that Grandmothers are looking after
the HIV/AIDS orphans of their children
who have died. EDL has partnered with
The Elim Hlanganani Care for the Aged
Centre to service another 100 orphans
in the area. ‘House Mothers’
have been located in the areas where
the orphans live and each will take
care of 25 orphans in the same way as
the larger groups at Pfuxanani.
In addition to Phuxanani, an EDL Project,
three |
 |
thousand unemployed learners
have completed workplace preparation
programmes to date in the EDL Foundation.
The Nelson Mandela Children’s
Fund, Johnson & Johnson International,
Gauteng Labour Department, the Development
Bank, Anglo Plantinum, Anglo Vaal, the
French Embassy, W & R SETA, and
the ETDP SETA have supported these learners. |
